Revision Shoulder Replacement

Revision surgery for failed prior shoulder replacements

Overview

Painful, stiff or non functional shoulder replacements, including those for acute fracture or dislocation, which require second or subsequent surgery are high risk and require meticulous planning and execution. Dr Clifton has undertaken 12 months of further sub-specialty training in this field in order to try and enhance patient safety and outcomes.

Condition Causes

Polythelene wear, implant loosening or fracture, rotator cuff failure and infection are all causes of failure of shoulder replacements.

Condition Symptoms

Pain, stiffness, dislocation and weakness are all symptoms of a failed shoulder replacement.

Treatment Options

Diagnosis of the cause of failure will be undertaken and where appropriate, surgery to remove the prosthesis and replace it with a new prosthesis in either one or two stages.

Prognosis

Many patients experience significant relief with appropriate treatment, though some may need ongoing management.

Conclusion

Failed shoulder replacements are a debilitating condition requiring sub-specialist management. In appropriate patients, further surgery can yield excellent outcomes.
